The new moon
The astronomical new moon before Ramadan 2027 occurs on Saturday, 6 February 2027 at 15:56 UTC, and the new moon before Shawwal on Monday, 8 March 2027 at 09:29 UTC (US Naval Observatory). The new moon itself is invisible. The crescent can usually be seen only on a later evening, once the moon is old enough and far enough from the sun, which is why a sighted start can differ from a calculated one.
